Birthday for a Fashionista!

This cake was made for my friend Jenn's birthday party. She really loves fashion and has a blog, http://daisiesnchains.blogspot.com/, where she shares all of her secrets and advice for DIY fashion.
I was having trouble coming up with a design idea for the cake because there are so many different things I could have made....a shoe box, shopping bags, a jewelry box, etc. However, her super sweet and observant boyfriend pointed me to this blog post of hers, http://daisiesnchains.blogspot.com/2011/06/wish-list-ikat-you-kat.html. I had never heard of this "ikat fabric" because I'm really terrible at staying up with fashion trends....I still have clothes from high school hanging in my closet!  I immediately knew I had to use this for the cake design! Here is a picture of the design "inspiration".

The purple ikat print was handpainted with food gel and water on white fondant.

The green sashes and ties were made out of fondant and the 'J' initial was made out of gumpaste and supported by wire.

The top tier was white almond cake with lemon buttercream and the bottom tier was white almond cake with strawberry chiffon.

I also made these white almond petit fours to go along with the cake.

The birthday party was a wine tasting competition. The bottle labels were covered and numbered 1-7. Everyone had to taste and guess which number was which type of red wine, i.e. chardonnay, shiraz, malbec. It was so much fun! I really love red wine but am obviously terrible at knowing which is which...I didn't get any right, haha!

Here's the birthday girl with her cake!

...and, wearing her matching Ikat scarf!

I hope you had an amazing birthday Jenn!
