Winnie The Pooh

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to make a cake for the Bake A Wish organization in Austin.  Formerly known as Free Cakes for Kids, this organization is made up of volunteers who make free birthday cakes for Austin area children and youth who probably would not get one otherwise.  The organization serves Austin-area agencies that cater to disadvantaged children and youth, i.e. shelters, foster services, and children's homes.
I became a volunteer over a year ago and am constantly amazed at how many children these agencies help, as well as how many volunteers are truly wanting to make these children's birthdays special.
The little boy I made a cake for last week wanted a Winnie the Pooh themed cake, and he was so excited when I arrived at his house with it. There is nothing like watching the joy and happiness on a little child's face when he receives something as simple as a birthday cake. I'm sure most of us can't remember a year when we didn't get a cake or dessert on our special day.

For this cake, I found coloring book pages to inspire me.  I made fondant plaques and hand sketched Winnie, Tigger, Eyore, Pigglet, and the bees. I used powder food colors to dust the colors on the images.

The honey in the jar is made of piping gel.
