Dr. Seuss Birthday!

This was such an exciting cake to make! I have truly wanted to make a Dr. Seuss-themed cake for years and finally got the chance!  This cake was for a 10 year boy named Noah.
As I started doing my "research" for this cake, I went to the library to check out a few of the Dr. Seuss books. I couldn't believe how many stories there were...ones that I didn't even know about! I then had trouble deciding which stories to capture in the cake design. I finally decided to go with 4 of the more popular stories...

At the top of the cake, there is a plate with Green Eggs and Ham, all made of gumpaste.

Below the plate is the red hat from The Cat In The Hat.  The hat is made of vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream covered in fondant.

Below the hat is a fish bowl with the red fish and blue fish from One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  The fish bowl is made of vanilla cake and vanilla buttercream covered in fondant.  The splashes of water are made of gumpaste.

And, finally, the base of the cake was covered in strips of colored fondant to resemble the story Oh, The Places You'll Go.

I love how simplistic and "sketchy" all of the pictures in Dr. Seuss books are.  It was fun to replicate that in cake.  I used black food gel to paint all of the lines to resemble these sketches.
